The Met Gala took place around ten days ago, and all these beautiful
gowns walking the red carpet were a heavenly sight. Everyone knows that the Met
Gala is like the Oscars for fashion and everyone go full out to impress. This
year was no exception; however the theme was a little bit hard to nail: Punk
from Chaos to Couture.
Now without going into a debate over the theme, and how they chose a concept,
whose main fixation is to break away from the norms of society, and declare a
state of anarchy, and here they are showcasing it as pieces of display in a
museum!
Back to the dresses, some of the invited celebrities had a
full understanding of what punk means, and picked dresses that are punk in
spirit, while others went full out, and made it seem like they were going to a costume
party rather than a red carpet event, and there are some who had no grasp of
the meaning of the word.
The Good:
It is the young in Hollywood who shone the most at the
event, with their clothes, accessories hair and makeup selection. It was a tough
one to choose a top five, but here is the condensed list.
First is Taylor Swift
and her black Jemendel dress. It is
very appropriate to the theme, with the collar armor thing going on, and her
makeup and hair was impeccable. Actually this is a really good look for Taylor,
showing her tougher side, enough with cute pie act.
Second is Anne Hathaway
who blew everyone with her edgy Valentino
number, and her new blonde hair-do. She looks bad-ass, and totally made up for
her mistake at the Oscars. Her previous look was more aiming to blend with the
wall with its pale colour and boring hair and makeup, but this time she was dangerously
breath taking. The blonde hair is a keeper.
Cameron Diaz
stepped away from the generic black, and opted a navy blue cape like dress with
a studded waistline from Stella McCartney.
Picking a British designer was a wise choice, as the punk movement started from
the streets of London, and thus they have the most understanding of it.
Blake Lively, who
was seen recently fitting the role of a boring housewife as opposed to the sexy
upper east side vixen, has finally came back to her Gossip Girl roots with this
fabulous Gucci gown, it enunciated
her curves, and kept it fresh but yet related to the theme.
Last on the list is Miss
Dakota Fanning and her edgy Rodarte
dress. It is sexy, edgy, young but yet appropriate. This young actress has come
a long way from poufy princess gowns to become on the hottest young Hollywood actresses.
I particularly love the beading on the sheer waist line; add so much elegance
to the dress.
The Bad:
We start with Beyoncé
and her Givenchy gown. I first hated
the gown, and then liked it and then hated it again. The matching thigh high
boots is what killed it, she should have opted for a simpler shoe wear, and the
gloves were tad bit too long. But the dress on its own was really pretty.
Second is Miley Cyrus
and her Marc Jacob net dress. Among all, Miley captured the theme the
most, with the hair and makeup and the dress, which is really nice. However,
her pale skin is what put me off. You cannot see a difference between the
undergarment of the dress and her skin tone, and maybe she was going for that
shock factor, however, a little tan would have gone a long way.
Christina Ricci
took it a little bit too far with her Vivienne
Westwood dress. It is a little bit teenagey like, something completely
acceptable if Avril Lavigne chose to
wear, but not for Christina. This pattern
is a signature Vivienne Westwood
design, and it looks good on blazers and bags, but it becomes a bit too much
when used on an entire dress, it is equivalent of wearing a classic Burberry check pattern, which we all
know is not acceptable.
Speaking of Burberry,
Sienna Miller chose a white dress
matched with a black leather studded jacket from the fashion house. Both items
are lovely, and I am big fan of the brad, however just putting on a studded
leather jacket does not do the trick on such an event.
Last is Gwenth Paltrow
and her Valentino Couture dress. Did she
even get the memo? An all pink gown, on a punk themed night? If it was black or
even red it would have been acceptable, but not PINK.
The Ugly:
We start off with Kim
Kardashian. Do I even need to say anything??? This Riccardo Tisci dress was a walking disaster. I don’t even know what
the hell she was thinking about? Kim
is obsessed with the way she looks, and makes sure she looks impeccable
everywhere she goes, even grocery shopping, so how did she end up choosing
this! She was never invited to the Met Gala
because she is not considered to be a real celebrity, and this year an invite
was extended to her because she is Kanye’s
girlfriend, who was performing at the event, and this is what she wears? Where do
I begin? The pattern of the dress is horrendous, and resembles that of a sofa pattern from the 60’s, to make matter
worse, the dress seems to have a built in glove to it, so her hands were not
visible and blended in with the pattern, and then she chose to wear a matching
pattern shoes! And given that she is in the last months of her pregnancy, maybe
she should have chosen a ore flowy option.
This was an utter disaster.
Can someone please call Sarah
Jessica Parker and tell her that her Carrie
Bradshaw days are over. The dress, boots and head piece by Gilesand and Philip Treaty are something
which the actress’s alter ego would have worn on Sex and the City, and we would have gushed over it. But in real
life Sarah is not as fabulous, and
such fashion statements are too big for her.
Ask Jennifer Lopez to
dress up in punk, and she comes dressed like a giraffe! I don’t know who is the
designer of this dress, and quite frankly I don’t want to know. Animal prints
are tricky business, while a leopard print is sexy, a giraffe print not so
much, and completely not themed related.
Katy Perry took
the dress code very seriously, and she edged into looking like she is going to
a Halloween party. The Dolce and Gabanna
dress was not the most flattering dress, and the crown was a step too far. D&G are known for their black and
lacy numbers, with rock punk edginess to them, so I don’t know why she picked
this in particular.
Last on the list is Madonna,
who is known for her crazy attires, but she too looked like she was going to a costume
party rather than a red carpet event. Riccardo
Tisci’s designs were not having a good day on the carpet, as this uniform
was just too much with the knee high stockings, pink heels and black choker.
