The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly: Golden Globes Edition

One of the things I love the most about the beginning of a new year is the signalling of the arrival of the award seasons. With few weeks separating us from the Academy Awards, the excitement is building up. And no, it is not to know who is going to win an Oscar, because honestly it has become so predictable through the years. Meryl Streep will always be nominated regardless of the roles she plays,Best actor/actress/movie always go to a film which is based on a true life story  or is a biography of some famous but yet troubled person. In addition, I have, lost my faith in The Academy ever since Angelina Jolie won best supporting actress in 1999, and that joke of a movie “Inglorious Bastard” was nominated for an Oscar few years ago.

The excitement is for the red carpet and the dresses that everyone will be talking about. Award ceremonies are to celebrities what prom is to normal people. An opportunity to buy an extravagant dress in the hopes that everyone’s eyes will be on you.

Couple of weeks ago, the Golden Globe signaled beginning of the award season for this year. And boy, oh boy what dresses were worn that night. So, without further ado, I present to you: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Golden Globes Edition.

The Good:
Let us start with the best dressed ladies of the night. The ladies that made watching hours and hours of red carpet walks bearable.

First is Kate Hudson and her fabulous Alexander McQueen dress. When I saw it, I knew it was going to be the best dress of the night, without even seeing the rest of the dresses, and I was right about that.  Remember in 2010 when she wore that fabulous Emilio Pucci dress for the SAG award, for years she could not match the fabulousty of this dress until now. The dress compliments her beautiful petit figure, showing just the right amount of skin without daring key hole, and most importantly it screams Alexander McQueen. No one else could have worn it better.

Runner up to the fabulous Kate is Miss Jennifer Lopez who rocked a flesh-colored Zuhair Murad Haute Couture dress. The dress showed all her luscious curves, without actually showing any of it. Jennifer knows how to be sexy and keep it classy, unfortunately not something other actresses know to do, as we will see later.

What I love the most about these two dresses, that they are signature designs by their designers, you do no need to check or ask for the name of the designer, because they are a true reflection of their designer’s style, a signature piece.

Joining the company of these two amazing dresses is the classical Chanel dress Anne Hathaway wore to accept her award for best supporting actress. The dress was elegant, classy and time-less.

Next is a double win for Tina Fey and Amy Pohler . Who are not necessarily the best dressed of the evening, but they wore remarkable gowns throughout the night , making us restore some faith that award ceremonies can actually be fun and enjoyable . However, the highlight of their wardrobe collection was their red carpet ensemble, where Tina wore a lovely white and black lace L’Wren Scott dress, while Amy complemented her by wearing a female suit by Stella McCartney. I love their choices, especially Amy’s; it is not easy to pull off a suit, and on a red carpet!!! She did it right, with her gorgeous Charlotte Olympia shoes, and the right amount of cleavage to make it feminine.

The last actress (but certainly not the least) who made it to the “good” list is Emily Blunt with her gorgeous golden Michael Kors dress.  It complemented her body shape and skin tone perfectly, and showed the right amount of skin, and kept it classy at the same time.

The Bad:

Enough with the compliment and the nice talk, it is time now to fry those celebrities that disappointed. The bad ones, are not the ugliest, but they are just not creative or unique, just Meh, boring or predictable.

We start with Sofia Vergara. I love this hot Latina to pieces, she cracks me up all the time in Modern Family. But this black sequence dress, does not do anything for me, it just looks like a failed attempt in copying her fabulous green sequence dress from last year. It feels so “been there, done that”, Sofia has an amazing body, and any other design will look perfect on her, so she should change it up before everyone starts over-looking her .

Next is Taylor Swift and her Donna Karan eggplant mermaid gown. The dress is beautiful, but it does not fit Taylor perfectly, and the colour is not doing her any good. It is also a bit boring for a 22 year old, she has all the time in the world to dress up like that, but in the meantime she should enjoy the liberty of wearing more “out-there” designs. Stop the act Taylor, we all know you are a serial-dater, and dressing modestly is not going to change that.

Amy, oh Amy. I love you to bits, so why are you making me do this? The Marchesa dress is fabulous, and would have been one of the best dresses of the season, if it came in any other colour. Wearing a dress with the same colour as your skin tone is never a good idea, so why did you do this? You cannot see the details of the dress, and it makes Amy seems paler than she already is. Simply this was a wrong chase for Miss Adams

Guilty of committing a similar mistake is newest Hollywood It-Girl Amanda Seyfried. The
dress was not all around terrible, but it was not the best either.  The dress needs someone with a darker skin tone to showcase the details of its design. Only through close inspection did I notice the see-through material integrated within the dress. In addition the dress did not complement her body at all, making her look like she gained few pounds here and there.

Julia Bowen, was that a dress or just a piece of fabric wrapped around your body? With Sofia Vergara as you co-star and red carpet companion, you ought to try harder than this. It is  just a pile of wrinkled fabric, with a sloppy over-all effect.

The Ugly:

Here comes the best part. The worst dressed of the event. Five dresses popped up from the rest and took the lead in the ranking. So with no further delays, here come the black swans of the night:

Jessica Chastain, you may have not won a globe, but you definitely won the worst dressed award. The baby blue Calvin Klein dress was hands down the ugliest dress on the red carpet. This dress is meant to be worn by a woman of curves that is the why the gown seemed over sized  with a lot of “open space” which should have been filled with human flesh. In addition, the hair-do did not help either.

A close second was Lucy Liu and her floral Carolina Herrera ball gown. It was just a bit too much, with a dress this size, a solid colour would have been better on it, the floral pattern made it too-much. I don’t understand why a woman with such a petite and beautiful body would hide it behind layers of fabric and floral print.

Committing the floral mistake also is Sienna Miller, and yes she wore a crop top to the Golden Globes. But what truly killed the dress is that pin/red floral print on it, with some flowers popping up!!!!! This dress is doing nothing for her, and for a British actress she should have presented her country’s fashion better. She can use a tip or two from Dame Helen Mirren.

The Versace dress worn by Halle Berry was nothing but a reincarnation of the Jenifer Lopez green dress circa P.Diddy era. Everything was wrong with it, the pattern, the cut and the excess of skin showed. For a mother of a young girl, who is also undergoing a series of domestic problem, Halle should have dressed more appropriately for a woman her age. Proving that you are still sexy can be done without baring it all. Keep it classy next time Halle.

Eva Langoria committed a similar crime with her racy Pucci black gown. The upper part of the dress is lovely, the long sleeves with the open key hole is kind of lovely, it is only when looking at it from the back and in full length, that I have changed my mind about it. With an open back and thigh-high slit, Eva has definitely crossed the red line. Like Halle she is just trying too much. We all know how fabulous your tiny body is, we all saw it for 8 consecutive years on Desperate Housewives, and there is no need for all that. Of, course the night did not end too well for Miss Langooria, who had a massive wardrobe malfunction at the after party.

Well that’s about it from the Golden Globes the award season has just started and more posts about it are along the way.

So until next time
Stay Pink
